Remember a time in school when you needed to memorize? In grade school a teacher told us about HOMES to help remember the five Great Lakes- Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior

These acronym mnemonics are all over the place. The trick is to have one that’s catchy and meaningful.

CHIPSI

I learned this acronym while earning my black belt in Kyuki-Do (pronounced “cookie dough” for real, seriously I’m not lying). Although I recited it about a million times, I’m not sure I truly appreciated the value of CHIPSI until several years had passed.

What is CHIPSI?

· Integrity

· Perseverance

· Self-control

· Indomitable spirit

It was cemented into my mind, right before I pushed off to college. Not like I was reciting it often but sometimes CHIPSI just popped into my head. I think it’s a great little reminder that fosters a positive mental attitude…who doesn’t need a little positive?
